Wales's History & Culture |
|
Wales has a fascinating and complex history – with Henry VIII’s Act of Union creating Wales as a country in 1536, bringing together a loose collection of kingdoms and lordships.
The tranquillity of the Welsh landscapes today hides a turbulent history
. Despite the Romans occupying Britain for 400 years, they never fully
subdued Wales – but this struggle against Roman invasion which was
followed by attempts from the Saxons, Vikings and Normans has left
Wales with more Castles
per square mile than any other country in Western Europe.Much of
Wales’s natural beauty is increased by these wonderful Castles and a
visit to at least one is a must during your stay in Wales.
Welsh nationalism has undergone a revival over the past 30 years or so – particularly in the area of education and the Arts. The Welsh language is now more widely spoken, with many being encouraged to learn the language in later life.
Wales also has a renowned affinity with both poetry and music , having a long history of folk music as well as a plethora of successful bands such as the Stereophonics and of course legendary singers such as Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey. The national sport of Wales is rugby union , and it is both watched and played passionately by many right across Wales.
